Genetic Counselling
Genetic counselling is a specialist healthcare service that helps individuals and families understand genetic conditions, inherited risks and genetic testing options. It provides an opportunity to discuss concerns, ask questions and make informed decisions about testing and healthcare.
In most cases, yes. Genetic counselling helps ensure the most appropriate test is selected and that you understand the potential benefits, limitations and outcomes before proceeding.
Your counsellor will discuss your personal and family history, explain relevant genetic information, review testing options and answer any questions you may have. The appointment is tailored to your individual circumstances.
Yes. Some individuals seek advice about family history, inherited conditions or existing genetic results without proceeding to testing.
Most consultations last between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on the service booked and the complexity of the discussion.
Genetic Testing
Following genetic counselling, a suitable test may be recommended. Most tests are performed using a saliva sample collected at home and returned directly to the laboratory. Some specialist tests may require a blood sample.
Most results are available within approximately 4 to 6 weeks, although turnaround times vary depending on the type of test and laboratory involved.
Clinical genetic testing is highly accurate when performed by accredited laboratories. However, every test has limitations and no genetic test can detect every possible genetic change or condition.
A Variant of Uncertain Significance is a genetic change for which there is currently insufficient scientific evidence to determine whether it is associated with disease. Your genetic counsellor will explain any findings and their significance.
Not always. Some tests may identify a genetic explanation for a condition, while others may not identify a cause despite comprehensive analysis. Genetic testing is one part of a wider clinical assessment.
Results and Follow-Up
Your genetic counsellor will explain the result, discuss any implications for your health and family members, and help you understand possible next steps or referral pathways where appropriate.
A negative result may reduce the likelihood of a particular inherited condition, but it does not always eliminate risk entirely. The interpretation depends on the test performed and your personal circumstances.
In some situations, genetic findings may be relevant to biological relatives. Your genetic counsellor can discuss whether family testing or further assessment may be appropriate.
Yes. You will receive a copy of your genetic test report together with an explanation of the findings from your genetic counsellor.

CKE Genetics uses secure systems and processes to protect patient information and maintain confidentiality.
